Magellan user's manual

Garbage (illegible) characters

12-1. About Garbage character

Sometimes you have ever seen the web page that is full of garbage characters.
It happens in case that the characters are recognized as wrong language, and web-browser shows as wrong characters which was not intended to use. These condition is called Garbage characters.

Magellan can handle multiple language, the character set is automatically done.
In the e-mail, character set is usually decided in the header info of charset. As there are rules on handling of characters in each languages, you will not see garbage characters as long as the e-mail is sent out keeping the rules. In fact, it is often broken and you receive the message of garbage characters.

12-2. Exception of character rules

Even if you are sending in single language, some characters might be illegible. For example, Japanese peculiar character of shift-jis encoding is unavailable on other encoding JIS. The problem is often caused in the case that operating system is different. Magellan can usually handle such message that includes character in certain operating system only as multilingual mail, in order for receiver to read correctly as long as his system can read the character.
If you don't know receiver's operating system, you should not send peculiar characters which is available only on the Macintosh.

12-3.Character that is impossible to send via e-mail

When you are going to send e-mail including the character that is not suitable for e-mail, Magellan will notice you. However, in case of above mentioned characters peculiar in operating system, Magellan will not warn you.

If received message includes unsuitable characters, Magellan will try to repair the character and show original characters as long as possible however, the following message will rarely interrupt the indication of e-mail body.

### Conversion was stopped because unsuitable character found. ###

Magellan can correct encoding even sender has mistaken.
But because this message includes unsuitable character before encoding,
Magellan could not repair and show that character.

Please ask sender to reject unsuitable character and send this message.

The above message will appear after the place of an exact unsuitable character.
Because in such case that e-mail has not 'charset' header and does not keep any rules of encoding, Magellan has no way to know the character.
